ROTARY IN GRAVESEND

What are Gravesend Rotarians and what do they do?

A Rotarian can come from any business or profession from Acupuncturist to Zoo keeper and he or she will work or live locally.

The Rotary motto is "Service Above Self" and as part of our personal "hands on" service to the local community:-

Every year we take about 100 local people who might otherwise not get out, for visits out into the countryside.

Every week for fifteen years, we took local blind people to Dartford to enjoy an evenings dancing.

For nearly 20 years we visited schools and have given the school leavers an experience of being interviewed for a job.

And also we visit schools and discuss the problems of finance that school leavers might face when they start work.

To help parents recognise the first signs of drug or solvent abuse and fight the menace to young children we have produced and distribute Drug Awareness cards to primary school parents.

And each year provide a specialised teaching caravan which visits local schools with its own specially trained teacher to instruct young children of the hazards of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and various substances.

Every year we hold a competition amongst schools in Gravesham and present a prize to the tidiest.

We provide transport and help in taking local disabled children out on `Kids Out' day to Chessington World of Wonder.

And we have we fitted smoke alarms and front door "spy holes" in senior citizens homes throughout Gravesend.

Each year we take a coachload of children who are over here from Chernobyl, out for a day at the seaside to help them in their fight against radiation sickness.

And we regularly help collect finds for charities such as Marie Curie and Macmillan Nurses.

The next time you walk from the Anglesea Centre or the Gravesend railway station towards the Lord street car park stop and look opposite the Woodville Halls at the scented garden for the blind (which is now a rose garden) which our club members financed, designed and built twenty five years ago to mark our fiftieth anniversary..

When someone asks ` who are Rotarians and what do they do' ... please tell them!
