ABOUT OUR CLUB
Club meetings
We are part of Rotary International - service clubs around the world through which business and professional men and women serve their local communities and support work in other countries to improve the lives of their peoples. The Rotary Club of Gravesend was formed in 1927, has about 45 members, all professional and business people who work or live locally. Click the links above to see what is on this page.
They are held on Mondays at 12.45 for 1 p.m. at the Masonic Hall, Wrotham,
Road, Gravesend, Kent. It would be helpful if visiting Rotarians telephone as long as possible
before their visit so we can give the caterers accurate numbers of those dining:
Simon Lancaster: home: (01474) 566690 work: (01474) 567915 or email There are no meetings on public bank holidays. On the 5th Monday of a month we usually hold an evening meeting instead of the lunch meeting. Travel: By car from the A2 London to Dover Road, leaving at the Tollgate intersection and taking the A227 signposted to Gravesend. This is Wrotham Road, and the Masonic Hall is about 2.5 miles from this intersection on the left and opposite the Police Station. There is only limited parking at the Hall, and it is not always available. There is a large long stay surface car park (60p for 2 hours) between Lord Street, Windmill Street and Parrock Street (see map above) with entrances from both Windmill Street and Parrock Street. By train to Gravesend Station on the main London (Charing Cross, Waterloo, London Bridge, Cannon Street) to Kent Coast line. They run approximately every half hour and the journey time from London is about 50 minutes to an hour. More information and maps from Gravesham Council's web site
Weekly lunchtime meetings are held where in addition to club business, members are brought up to date by outside speakers on local and international issues and needs. The Rotary Club of Gravesend’s annual "ON YOUR BIKE" sponsored ride has now raised over£250,000 which has mainly gone back into local community needs. See the On Your Bike section of this web site for more information. This money has helped to finance a local ambulance, provide transport for the elderly and infirm, build and equip a ward at the local hospice, , support cancer research charities, provide carers for cancer patients , to keep the air ambulance flying and support dozens of local charities. Locally. We encourage school children to care for their environment by organising annual school tidiness competitions and help them to prepare for work experience with mock interviews. We have also held career and hobbies exhibitions. We provide transport for the blind, housebound and handicapped and have fitted smoke alarms and security systems for senior citizens. The rose garden (opposite the Civic Centre ) which started life as a scented garden for the blind was funded, designed and built by local Rotarians. Internationally we have supplied doctors and the equipment to relieve blindness in third world countries and our members have taken supplies to and worked in Rumanian and Philippine orphanages and hospitals. Emergency supplies are sent to help survivors of earthquakes, floods etc. and books are collected to educate third world children. Young people from different countries are brought together to encourage international understanding.
The Rotary movement welcomes new members committed to our ideals. There is more about membership of Rotary on our national web site. If you are interested in joining the Rotary Club of Gravesend please contact our Secretary whose contact details are above.
